Antonio Abad, M.D. Psy. D.

 

Antonio Abad M.D., Psy. D., is a psychiatrist with additional qualifications in Pharmacology and Forensic Psychiatry. He has more than twenty years of extensive clinical, research, and teaching experience in the United States. Dr. Abad was born in Spain. He received his medical degree, M.D., from the University of Navarra and attained additional qualifications at the Doctorate of Psychiatry Program, Psy. D., Department of Psychiatry and Medical Psychology at the University Complutensis of Madrid School of Medicine in Spain.

Dr. Abad completed advanced psychiatry training programs in the US at Beth Israel Medical Center and at Bellevue Hospital, in New York City, since 1991. He attained additional qualifications in Psychopharmacology, since 1993, as the Clinical Research Fellow of the National Institute of Mental Health NIMH Clinical Research Center at the Department of Psychiatry NYU School of Medicine. Dr. Abad attained additional qualifications and experience in the field of Forensic Psychiatry, as a Fellow in Psychiatry and the Law at the joint Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program of the New York University School of Medicine, the NYU School of Law, and the Departments of Psychiatry at Columbia University and Albert Einstein School of Medicine in New York City. He has served as a Professor in Clinical Psychiatry at the NYU School of Medicine since 1999 and as faculty of the Miller School of Medicine at the University of Miami since 2010.

Dr. Abad has received numerous awards and honors by the US NIMH and other prestigious professional organizations. He was also the receipient of the 2009 National Alliance on Mental Illness NAMI Exemplary Psychiatry Award. Dr. Abad has served as the Chief of the Forensic Psychiatry Unit and other units at Bellevue Hospital, in New York City, and in other faculty and leadership positions within the NYC Health and Hospitals Corporation, the NYU School of Medicine, and the NYC Office of Emergency Management.

Dr. Abad has unique and extensive experience in Forensic Psychiatry with more than 10 years as an expert witness in Forensic Psychiatry for the City of New York, at the NYS NYC Combined Supreme Court. He has also served as an expert witness for Prosecuting and Defense attorneys in various states and in Spain. For more than twenty years, Dr. Abad has maintained a private practice in General Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry and Psychopharmacology.
