Marsha Flood, MS, LMHC, NCC Today, approximately 50% of marriages end in divorce. Anger and depression are common feelings for people who are in the process of ending their marriages. In addition, they may experience feelings of rejection and abandonment. To be left by a loved one is a huge blow to self-esteem and can lead to a sense of failure and helplessness. Simultaneously, as people are trying to cope with the above stressors, they are involved in the process of Legal Divorce. They are now part of a system that may seem confusing and adversarial. They face a seemingly never-ending series of challenges and frustrations just as they are experiencing the greatest emotional distress. Highly emotional people who are entering a dispassionate system may react and behave in ways that are completely contrary to their normal behavior. Data indicates that of the total amount of time spent in verbal exchanges between divorcing individuals and their attorneys, 22 to 40 percent of it is spent discussing the client’s emotional or psychological problems. This leaves less time for the attorney to focus on the task of obtaining a successful outcome for the client AND increases the client’s fees.
